Message from Betty Haass, president
Sunscreen has SPF numbers to tell you how much protection it provides. Maybe you've seen a similar rating on clothing called UPF. I wish there was an RPF (REALTOR® Protection Factor) scale to demonstrate just how much protection our state association provides us.
If an RPF did exist, I know the rating would be high for the Legal Hotline. Every member has access to an attorney who can discuss listing, closings, license law, and more. The RPF would also be up there for the legislative and regulatory protection we receive from our association's governmental affairs efforts and TREPAC involvement. As you know, our efforts in that arena have prevented transfer taxes, a tax on commissions, and many other measures that would've been detrimental to our business.
You can further increase the business protection you receive by taking advantage of educational opportunities, association meetings, and information available to you as a Texas REALTOR®.
Keep informed of what's going on through Texas REALTOR® magazine, the Focus e-newsletter, the Texas REALTOR® Update podcast, and TexasRealtors.com.

Don't let our trademark slip away
You know the difference between the terms REALTOR® and real estate agent. But some consumers do not. If we're not all careful, we could lose our trademark, like happened with the terms aspirin and escalator.
The REALTOR® trademark is a valuable member benefit that tells people we go beyond the basics required of real estate licensees. Watch this three-minute video from NAR that explains why protecting our trademark is important and how you can easily determine if you are using the term correctly.

TREC changes you need to know about
The Texas Real Estate Commission has made several changes to cut costs and streamline operations.
First, you can no longer call a toll-free number to reach the commission. Instead, dial 512/459-6544 or visit www.trec.state.tx.us, where you can find FAQs, forms, contact info, and online license renewal. Disconnecting the toll-free number is one of 15 ways the commission plans to address the state's anticipated budget shortfall. TREC has eliminated or scaled back building and technology improvements, staff training, and travel.
The commission has also proposed a rule to encourage online submissions of forms. If the rule passes, submitting a paper form would be subject to a $20 fee if there is an online process for submitting that same form.
If TREC does not have your current e-mail address, you may miss important communications. Update your e-mail with TREC today.

IRS provides guidance on health-tax-credit eligibility
Small businesses can use new information from the IRS as well as a flowchart to figure out if they qualify for the new tax credit under the health reform law. The document explains that small businesses may receive state health-care tax credits and still qualify for the full federal tax credit. Also, small businesses can receive the credit for additional dental and vision coverage.
